Kreutzer is a genre-blending theatrical production that fuses three masterworks—Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoy’s incendiary novella The Kreutzer Sonata, and Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1 (Kreutzer Sonata)—into a provocative tale of jealousy and redemption. Set aboard a train with no clear beginning or end, the production immerses audiences in a powerful emotional landscape enriched by a haunting score interwoven with music by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Ljova, and Tavener.

Join us for an in-depth look at the fascinating ways music and literature are interwoven into the Kreutzer production with Dr. Tom Buesch, professor of Arts and Humanities at Colorado Mountain College (CMC).
Dr. Tom Buesch has loved classical music and great literature since his early teens. His favorite composers are Beethoven, Mozart, and Wagner. His favorite authors are Faulkner, Eliot, Mann, Goethe, and Rilke. Buesch received his Masters and Ph.D. in German Language and Literature at Northwestern. He spent 17 years as a diesel engineer at Robert Bosch Corporation and taught full-time at Colorado Mountain College in Aspen for 32 years. Buesch first came to Aspen in 1949, when his father built a house at First and Bleeker. He has attended almost all the concerts at the Aspen Music Festival every summer.
